Now we're starting to get into the weeds a bit, because I dont think up vote and down vote should dictate the posts place in line. What if we were to do something that allowed people to change the sort features of the posts. That way if someone wanted to see posts in a sub ranked by votes (whether up or down) they could sort it that way. But that's too much changing stuff around. I would rather just have a system where downvotes have no effect and only serve as a warning to other readers that OP may be retarded.
If there is a downvote option with no consequence, it will be abused by (((The Usual Suspects))).
But maybe there is another way to mitigate the abuse, rather than to discourage people downvoting. What about weighted votes, where the newbies and shills downvote doesnt have as much pull as AOUs downvote?
I am ok with whatever the system here is now. The only people I see bellyaching are shills and other worthless types who have nothing to offer general discussion.
