No you are not, that's absolutely correct. I don't think there is any way to "search" for a particular user, if you don't know the user's exact name.
That's probably by design, it's something would be able to answer with more clarity.

Yes, there's no way to do that, but if you look at their profile page (the u/username thing) you can view their posts and comments. That is, assuming you have the correct and complete name.
