High schools had shooting classes. Guys would take guns in their cars to high school so they could go hunting after school. The US had marksmanship programs with surplus guns available at a discount (it still exists, but it's nearly what it once was.)

I almost got suspended for drawing pictures of guns in art class. Oh how we've fallen.
Knew a person who was expelled for having a foam key ornament. The school called it a gun due to it being a picture and general shape of one. Then citing the no guns policy they had a good person expelled.
Same thing when a persons lunch box fell open and a plastic butter knife fell out. It was a knife so they were expelled.
Then again with a person who brought one of those cheap plastic disposable razors.
I thought all this insanity would end once I left schools but little did I know that it was just the symptoms of a much bigger rot.
Yeah, it's only gotten worse. Homeschool your kids.
