My wife and I were discussing sports and how we don't really enjoy them, and she proposed the assertion that watching sports and watching a movie are not really all that different. What do you guys think?

Depends what sport.

For example American Wrestling is obviously scripted, so it can be compared as a theatrical performance.

You have a point, however I would say american football is not the same as watching a movie.

That's not comparable, indeed.

American Football players wear pretty much the same thing kids do when they learn skateboarding.

Rugby is, on the other hand, what I enjoy watching.

but its still not the same as watching a movie with a story.

certain sports can be more exciting during the closing minutes, yeah

but they experience is different right?

yes because there's no guarantee that anyone "comes from behind"; there's no set "good guy" or "bad guy" (despite any sports journalism)

There are many forms of entertainment, and everyone has their preferences. If you play the sport yourself, or know someone who does then it goes a long way towards help you enjoy watching the sport, but it's still essentially entertainment. Unless you gamble, that's a whole different thing.

I would suggest there are many things, such as movies and sports, that are considered entertainment but that are not similar beyond the spectator aspect. Is a novel entertainment? Certainly, but the experience of reading the book vs. watching that book as a movie are vastly different.

It's not the same. Sports on tv have a lot of boring down time that a movie doesn't. They have commercials, time-outs, video reviews, more commercials and sometimes singing & dancing. For me to watch a game, I have to be doing other things as well, like cooking, going online, chatting with friends, drinking at a bar, etc. When I watch a movie, I don't want a bunch of distractions. I don't want to have to keep backing it up because I missed dialogue. If I'm watching a game and miss something important, it doesn't matter because they'll replay it again and again.
