I remember at some point there was a problem of license fees, because putt or atko had built the site using proprietary solutions which remained free for the first year or so and then they had to pay a license fee

Does any one remember that story?

I think that was when it was running on azure with a student thing.

I couldn't believe it when they revealed the original site was running on IIS and .net. Could have saved themselves a lot of headaches if they'd gone for a more OS agnostic platform, but hey, that's all done and dusted.

This is one of the reasons I think they always had in mind to start voat and then sell it out to somebody bigger.

the original was basically a school project by Atko

I personally like poal's quantum modem that is powered by our Amish horses but someone should probably feed them soon.

I was gonna say what kind of idiot runs anything on azure... but a student using a student thing actually makes some sense.

Dumb students, learning things the hard way. Hehehe, I said hard way. Hehehehe.

yes azure, it rings some bells

Yeah, vaguely. It seemed pretty obvious they had the bareass capital to get voat going and then were relying on an injection of funds from somewhere. But the user base was always so toxic that the actual site had actually no monetary value whatsoever.

I'm sorry I can't shed more light on the actual license issue, but there's plenty of better connected goats here who might know something. Iirc wasn't there a sitewide fund raising effort? Or was that to pay for something else?

Voat always had issues paying the bill left and right, the license fee was such a problem at some point they had no choice but to go full open source and pretty much rewrite the entire site

Yes. They used Microsoft software instead of free Linux. I think they had a lot of money in order to pay for something that you can have already have for free.

I cover it in my history of voat
