There's tons of German Shepherds in my area. The only spooky thing is they all get excited to see me even though I don't know them. Hell, my oldest visited the grandparents and made an instant buddy out of theirs to the point that my dad started calling the dog a traitor.
If I recall right, they seemed to be really popular around the time Magnum PI was airing. I want to say since 1995ish, toy breeds have been the in thing in terms of popular dog breeds. Most people that follow popular trends aren't really interested in having a dog but having an accessory. Toy breeds fit that niche where as the working breeds don't.
