I have a Fire TV stick and I use Kodi as sideloaded app to watch movie files, however that does not always work well due to performance problems.

An ASUS laptop running through an LG 4k tv. watch movies with a vlc media player or classic media player and I have a couple of 4tb hard drives

ok, i am using that as a fallback when the firetv player is not working, but then I have to run the HDMI cable to the tv first

HDMI from laptop to tv is what I am doing, I had to make the tv my pain screen so it stops the laptop screen lighting up unless I unplug the laptop from the tv then it works like normal laptop. edit I also have a mouse and keyboard plugged in so I can control it all from the couch.
