I know quite a bit about Berkeys. I bought enough stuff to become a dealer and get the dealer discount!
They filter out all the bad stuff except fluoride, which needs separate filter. They do this while retaining the mineral composition which can be good or bad depending on source water.
Basically they use compressed activated charcoal filters through a very slow gravity system. Fill it and forget it type deal. I have 5 systems, two of them the largest stainless ones with max filters (8 each).
I have had the water tested for everything at an ISO accredited facility and water come up 100% safe even though source water pre filter did have some stuff in it. Means the filters work.
Berkey is not a whole house solution. It is for drinking water, but they do sell shower filters which I've used. They work pretty well.
One fucked up thing is that often water supplies don't even use chlorine anymore, they use a cheaper thing....called chloramide or something like that. Harder to get rid of and will kill fish etc if not removed from the water. Great right?
I would get water tested first at reputable local place (ask your department of health or sanitation). See what's in it 100%, THEN choose filter based on that. But Berkey can handle damn near everything -- for drinking water.
My mom has one and she loves it. Every time I've ever gone over and tried the water it was fantastic.
Our water is fantastic, but admittedly I've had some from other sources that was not as good.
