Well in the book it wasnt like later, as he is going thru the house he says he petted Dog again. Not like he petted him yesterday. If Im walking past my dog I would say i pet him.

Then it depends on if the story is narrated in past or present tense. Also, @Theodore_Kent may be helpful.
