Other than pay bills, I was thinking about buying some MRE's or something similar just to have some extra long term storage food on hand.

If you want long long term storage, get freeze-dry. That keeps for 30 years or more. MRE has a shelf life of of a few years, longer if stored cool, but it's still wet pack and is supposed to be inspected after a few years. Inspected = open one and see if the snack bread is moldy.

No problem. The Mountain House stuff is usually considered the gold standard for freeze-dried, that's normally who Uncle contracts to make Meal, Cold Weather packs for the military.

There are a lot of people on youtube that talk about different MRE and how they taste, if you want an idea of what to expect from the civilian ones.
