Well, I suppose I can answer your question. "Good things come to those who wait" is advice for children: they are typically resentful of needing to wait. Adults need patience too, but adults get good things due to being proactive more often than simply waiting around.

That depends. If one person one one side of a river is waiting for his friend to cross but his friend finds it unsafe to cross. The waiting might take forever!

I think that this phrase is often taken out of context. The course of time often presents new opportunities, but that is not guaranteed and doesn't mean you can just sit idle and wait.
