ohhh good to know.. soooo it burn's better??

Evergreens like pine, etc... are the very worst wood to put in a stove or fireplace. Stick with hardwood. Saw it to size, shelter it from the weather, and wait until the following year to split it.

Cut it this winter to use next winter. And keep it under something so it doesn't get rained on.

I don't know that. Maybe I can learn something good here

A year is usually best. Make sure you store it properly.

Until it is dry.

It depends. Are you ... bark-up? (Loads shotgun) Or are you bark-down?

I don't get it. I need more firewood.

When piling the chopped and split wood for seasoning, some people say pile it so the bark is facing out while others argue you should pile it so the bark is facing in.

WaWhite is right, it takes about 6 - 12 months to dry out firewood. Ideally, you'd get wood that was cut down the previous winter, giving it the spring, summer & fall to dry out. Softwoods (pine, spruce, fur) will dry out much faster than hardwoods (oak, maple, beech). Additionally, softwoods burn fast and dirty. It'll keep you warm in a pinch, but be aware of why folks don't do it.

What I've done in the past when I don't have enough dry wood was grab a few arm loads of the wetter stuff I did have and arranged & stacked them around the woodstove to help dry them out enough to burn.

Also, keep an eye out for ash wood. It's a hardwood that, for whatever reason, can be burned pretty much immediately.

If you need more, keep an eye out for downed stuff on the side of roads. A few pieces here and there add up and will totally be worth it come February. If you're willing to deal with softwoods, keep an eye on craigslist, etc. Someone might just be giving it away.

I’m hoping to come across someone giving it away.
