They have a color code system listed in a table on wikipedia. It's 'anything goes'.

Yeah but you were right the first time. It's likely some kind of color code to identify himself as fulfilling some sort of role, likely organizer for a group. They're much more coordinated than the media addresses. There's a variety of various mobile apps they use to coordinate. 4chan infiltrated a few of their groups early on. The shit was cringe but interesting, way more organization than I expected.

Specifically it looks like one of the cheap large microfiber washcloths you can buy in multi-color packs at places like Harbor Freight for super cheap. The cost being so cheap and the variety of colors makes them ideal for such shit. couple packs and you're gtg.

Maybe.

Given how tight it's strapped to the backpack, I have doubts about this having any real use as a gas mask, it's not handy to put on your face and put back in place given how it's firmly attached. Now one could still argue that it's for casual use on top of the mask he's already wearing, as in you turn your head a bit toward the towel thing, and with one hand you maintain that towel thing on your mouth/nose. Not very handy especially if you need both hands to do anything, but it's still doable that way I guess.
