It is a bit silly since the cat is either alive or dead. It's can't be both. You only know what it is by opening the box to see that it had kittens, or not. That's what Schrodinger's cat example is meant to convey. It's a question of probabilities. Both possible until an observation confirms which it is.

The cat is a living thing though so it would observe that it is alive, no?

To the cat, it would not know if anything is outside the box. It is aware of existence inside the box only. You jumped to relativity from quantum craziness.

It's a little more than that. The current understanding is that the unobserved cat is really simultaneously alive and dead, and we're not just assigning probabilities to two possible observable options that we can't yet see.
