The mints have been shut down due to COVID-19 which i do agree is the root cause. There are sinks in the circulation graphs that could be avoided in which case the mints could produce fewer coins each year and thus be more efficient.

That doesn't explain to me how we wouldn't be in a better situation if we abolished coins.
