I disagree that the nicotine has a low detriment level. Too many people gettin help to pay for their self inflicted cancer. Opiates are definitely one of the worst for sure. And caffeine is likely beneficial.
Nicotine increases intelligence, also is one of the most powerful anti inflamitories, it has its upsides. Also on a long enough time line everyone gets cancer.
Its also mindblowingly addictive which is where the detriment comes from, because too many people take it waaaaaay to far and start smokin packs upon packs a day. I dont care if people wanna smoke at all, i enjoy cigars and pipes myself, but chainsmokers have a problem, and i dont want a sliver of my productivity going towards helping people with self induced problems.
It's not just the nicotine, tobacco has natural MAOI inhibitors as well, making tobacco very addictive. Nicotine alone is addictive, yes, but paired with the MAOI inhibitors in tobacco it's a whole other animal.
Consuming nicotine in gum, patch, or vape isn't in the same ballpark as tobacco.
