I think it’s like most art you either appreciate it or you don’t. I guess music is technically a form of poetry and I think most people enjoy that in one form or another.

When done properly, it can express things that normal language / format cannot. It can evoke things, get you to feel them, think them vs. just telling you what to think or feel.
