M1 Gerand if you have to shoot through the floor. Good in a defensive situation when you're dealing possibly with a large armed gang whos obvious intent is to rape/murder/loot, such as in a civil breakdown scenario.
Or if you still want to go .223, Mini-14 has a lot more going for it. Longer sights, shorter profile, easier to maintain.

I see where you're going with the Garand. From what I've seen, the clips are smaller than an AR-15 magazine, which doesn't seem ideal from a fast reloading perspective. The Mini-14 doesn't look like too bad of a platform. I already have my AR, though, so I'm not going to make a side-grade to my gear at this point.
