It was created by someone from that service, kind of for that service. They got uppity and even Reddit had to create it's own image service. It's just a thinly veiled pre-nipple tumblr at this point, and has the same kind of community.
I always just thought of them as Reddit's image host. And for that it worked well enough.
Never understood using it for more than that.
Stopped using it when I quit Reddit, which was long enough ago that I never really had to deal with the censorship.
