I think the government and mainstream media like protests, in general, it gives the populace a nice, but harmless, way to give their grievances.
If the protesters get tear gassed by the police, all the better, it makes for a better story and a better news day.
The protesters are happy because they earned a badge of honor, due to actual injury by the authorities.
The media is happy, because it makes for a great story.
The government is happy, because the media and the protesters are too busy circle-jerking about the story to actually change shit.
But the moment protesters bring semi-automatic guns to the protest, everything changes.
Cops with batons and shields will refuse to tear gas armed citizens. They don't want to get shot.
The media hates this, because they all end up being peaceful protests, despite guns being involved.
The government also doesn't like this, because it shows how limited their power is.
