This is very well explained in a book called "The Ordeal of Civility" by Cuddihy. Basically, they are not bonded by the love of themselves, but are bound by their shared hatred of what isn't them. This secularist attitude stems back a long time but an inverted form of morality exploded into various religions starting with a Jewish sect by a person named Sabbatai Zevi.
