If person X's ideas aren't mainstream, is X more likely to lie about his opinions?

I'd say yes, due to fear of shaming/persecution/exile/etc.

IF true, should this problem be corrected? Should people with "extreme" opinions feel more comfortable voicing these opinions?

Givin the chance, animals eat other animals. If I had to worry about a chance of someone eating someone else I think it would be ok to murder that person.

Your trait works if someone is attacking you. Self-defense. If an animal was attacking you, then kill the animal.
