The score is just a measure of popularity, and I'm uneasy with you training your users to care about it or judge others on that basis... in case it leads to something like voat's CCP-based censorship.
I know these issues are complex...
I can see where you would be uneasy about it, I really do. It will not lead to censorship based on popularity. Thats one of the reasons I suggest making votes given count towards score so people don't have to be popular to attain higher levels and get out of the new user tag.
Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about votes given building a user's score... I think it's probably not a good idea.
At least votes received mean something.. that on average you've done things that the community appreciates, or agrees with. If I end up with a massive negative score (like I had on voat) it means the community disagrees with me. As long as I still get to post and comment like anyone else - I couldn't care less. (Though it if you color unpopular users shit brown or something, that could be interpreted as encouraging brigading).
Building score by giving upvotes is too easy, and may encourage hordes of lurker bots and other problems.
No colors will be given for negative score ever. I would not approve that. You have a point, on the bots thing, however on the unpopular user thing I don’t think we want to punish users who have unpopular opinions I would honestly say we should probably encourage it to help poal not become an echo chamber.
