I have a long history working with technology and start-ups. I have a product idea that I've begun the patent process for with a patent attorney, but I need to prototype the product without someone stealing the idea, and have little experience with what is necessary to begin to bring it to market on my own dime - assuming the costs aren't extremely exorbitant.

Is there a primer somewhere I can lean on, or just general experience from anyone who has?

Build it, or find people who can that you trust(or have them sign an NDA) that can build it for you.

Too complicated to build myself and all the manufacturers for the components are in China which means a NDA doesn't mean squat, they'll steal it anyway.

Well it sounds like what you need to do is acquire components without revealing the entire design to any one manufacturer
