Burial has been illegal in China for sometime, even the people that can afford a graveyard plot have to cremate and then just bury the ashes.
That’s inaccurate.
Burial is not illegal but it’s strongly advised to use cremation, especially in large cities. The government will even pay for it for those who can’t.
Cremation is a traditional thing in most Asian countries (especially the south were the hot and humid weather is a vector to spread diseases.
All of China is a giant cemetery, those U shaped platforms covering every hill and mountain are graves, and the families of the dead that are buried there tend them every year. However those graves are more than 30 years old and people are not buried anymore anywhere in China that I've seen, which is most of China. Granted I'm not a chink burial expert, but I've gone through southern funerals and related shit. Southerners actually prefer burial, but it is not permitted. Even for people where money is no object, they could not bury the un-burned body because it was against the law/policy.

These only apply for large cities where cremation is obligated. Now If you own some land in the countryside and the deceased didn't die from a classified infectious disease, then you can bury them.
