The new "modern" artists gatekeeping the paths to art "world" were never going to let him into art school with paintings of sunny landscapes, nature, and children. Just as they do now, they demanded the grotesque, outrageous, and controversial, to try to make everyone else feel as miserable as they do. Idealizing family, culture, and tradition in art were and are verboten.

Ironically, they likely created their own worst enemy with their hubris. I'm sure there's a parallel with a Greek tragedy somewhere.
