Why does art need to have a message or convey some sort of idea anyway? In Monet's time all they did was try to capture the beauty they saw in the world. Maybe that is the source of the fall of western art: the idea that analysis is more important than appreciation. And following from that the idea that an artist must create something that can be analyzed.
