Traveling merchants who bought and sold in remote parts of Eurasia would have carried their own sets of weights along with them. The transactions had to meet their standards, not the standards of anyone else. But you can see how the need to deal with other measuring systems would have stimulated a knowledge of mathematics, since it would have been necessary to make conversions on the fly.
