GDPR is a controversial law that has benefits (e.g. transparency) and disadvantages (e.g. a lot of legal pressure and harsh punishments if accidentally breached).
But the biggest benefit is §20 data portability!
It mandates social media sites to provide a data export tool that exports all user data into one archive with the machine-readable data (often at least almost all user data).
That's extremely practical and so awesome! I always appreciate data portability!
Some websites sadly only allow requesting the user data via an email, and some have long minimum delays between requests (i.e. 1 month).
But that data portability functionality is highly appreciated.
