On mobile phones from 10 years ago, that did not support Adobe Flash, you probably needed to install a separate app for every video platform.

Of course, installed apps can be more sophisticated (e.g. offline functionality, caching for data saving, client-side user interface, etc.), but HTML5 is the reason you don't need to bother installing a truckload of different plug-ins (QuickTime, Silverlight, Adobe Flash, etc.) to cover all the websites you use.
