I am not old enough to have first-hand-experienced the age/epoch of pre-USB mobile phones, but I have heard stories about the times (early 2000s), where mobile phones had their own unique proprietary charging connector, and sometimes even changed per generation!

Since ~2009 however, most non-Apple devices have USB-B Micro? a unified charging connector for all mobile phones and accessories!

And in the mid-2010s, the manufacturers upgraded to USB-C, a connector with higher maximum currents and reversibile plug design.

Thanks to UniversalSerialBus, there is a spare charger or spare cable everywhere.

And the same ports can be used for power, data storage and all sorts of accessories.

Thanks, USB, for making our lives easier.

I will not take USB for granted.

Making USB devices is needlessly complex compared to traditional serial protocols, and non-free. The wire length limits are also terrible. They may as well have gone with ethernet + poe, which is better in every respect and similarly complex to implement in hardware devices.

Indeed, USB is not perfect, and technically by no means a substitution for ethernet/LAN cables, but certainly very practical for its own purpose.

Pfff, yeah, usb is great

However, those idiots (whoever they are) managed to design what's in the end just a fucking plug, with a "right and wrong" way to plug it.... I hate that shit, you are going to plug it and nope, wrong side! So you have to look at it basically... And evidently the entry point is on the sides. I mean it's stupid, there shouldn't be a potential for failure when you plug it

There, fixed https://pic8.co/sh/TGIXdU.jpeg

Fucking circular

I remember when USB stood for Universal Shit Box

It's a lot easier now than it once was, but I still get irritated with the different generations of USB (pic8.co).

But it certainly beats the alternative (imgs.xkcd.com)
