I started to post a comment and changed my mind, got a "leave site" pop-up that refused to go away and/or respond to any interventions beyond nuking the browser from task manager.

That "leave site" is a normal/standard behavior.
It's a security most browser have for when you start filling a <form> (comment - post - registration or login details) and accidentally click or use a keyboard shortcut to close the current window or go to the previous/next page.
The fact that you couldn't close it is related to your browser and has nothing to do with poal.
