One could almost make the case that sort of struggle has already started here in the US of A.

It may, but America and Europe now are missing some key things like a grounding in culture, community, tradition, and ethnic folk. And so, no one would martyr themselves preserving this atomized, consumerist, individual, ego-centric status quo. And no one would honor that sacrifice, as they did in Ireland.
