This would probably be a great place to find one of the VHSs that also have a DVD recorder and HDMI out, so I can finally digitize all of the old home videos before the film degrades.

That kind of stuff is pretty much gone at this point. Your best bet would be to just get a capture card and do it that way - assuming you actually have a player that handles your media.

I might have to have something custom made at this point. There are SOOO many tapes (closer to 1,000 than 500), might as well try to make the process as enjoyable as possible.
