Apparently some areas like parts of southern California and Austin have big mesh nets. I guess if you want the mesh, you gotta start the mesh. Little nodes like ours won't be good for doing that sort of heavy infrastructure lifting though. People would need to deploy dedicated powered nodes to star standing something like that up. Of course if you're just looking at it from an emergency preparedness standpoint, having a handful of these and dedicated devices like a tdeck or the media or side load the app, you'd be pretty set for your own little mesh as long as you could keep the nodes powered.
