For younger generations the rise of social media has a lot to do with it.
Getting drunk and doing stupid shit used to be a rite of passage. No matter how ridiculous you were, it would usually just stay between friends and turn into a funny story of youthful antics.
However, given a solid 10 years of me-too/cancel culture, along with the fact that anything stupid you do has the potential to be immortalized on a tik-tok, kids don't like to go out and drink and cause a youthful ruckus anymore. Way safer to stay at home and hit a vape pen.
