F-111s had an HF radio that overlapped the CB band. One time over Nevada I joined a conversation with a trucker. He told me the highway and mile marker sign he was at. I told him that I was ten miles behind him and would pass him in about a minute. He asked incredulously how fast I was going. I responded with triple nickle and moments later roared over him at about 100 ft. He got a kick out of it.

In 71-72 I was stationed at MCAS Futema, Okinawa. In the early hours before dawn we could hear the SR-71 take off from Kadena AFB about 8-10 miles away.

Always wanted to see the Bird in person, such an awesome machine for it's time, full analog controls and the best looking jet ever, like a 1980 Corvette Stingray grew wings

Semi-related, 1999-2003 I worked as a civilian contractor on one of the systems aboard the U-2. Most of the 'old-timers' I worked with had at one time or another also worked in the SR-71.

Reminds me of the story where a US aircraft carrier was arguing with a lighthouse about the right of way. Not sure if either one is real, but they are great stories nevertheless.
