Again, the story of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde can simply have the "magic potion" swapped out with "a lot of booze", and the story would still make perfect sense. Doctor Jekyll, a brilliant, sensible, but timid man, pounds down several shots of his "magic potion" (whiskey) and then, Mr. Hyde reveals himself. Mr. Hyde embodies the id, all of the dark impulses that sane people are able to repress. Alcohol removes that barrier, and unleashes the id.
