When you see something, ask yourself how it could be manipulated to produce various goals. Always know what the best and most likely moves can be made, and how those could be countered. Look at what everyone has, and think of how they can use it to get what they want, even if it involves multiple steps, like using something to acquire something something else. Keep in mind not just how things are, but also how things may be perceived to be by various people. Last thing, if the actions of other players don't factor into your game plan, it's doomed to fail. Always assume the best from your opponents, never underestimate them, think of how you would fight against yourself if you were them, and have counter strategies at the ready for such a response. Theory of mind is a potent weapon.
