This thing has me kind of salivating and strictly among us, I don't need it. On the other hand, how would I know before I tried it?

I see much potential for applications not intended by the manufacturer.

Yes, Gear Acquisition Syndrome is real and can affect anyone at any time. I've had GAS in various forms over the years ranging from computer gear, electronic test equipment, shop tools and especially synthesizers (I'm currently up to 64 synths!).

This ultrasonic cutter looks awesome. While I managed to avoid GAS with 3D printing, I can't help but want one of these for other purposes. I'm going to have to fight it because I'm sure it'll just sit there most of the time doing absolutely nothing. But it would be nice to have.

I remember watching an episode of This Old Tony where he made a DIY ultrasonic cutter from an ultrasonic cleaner, but it turned out to be pretty useless. If you're interested in the idea, check out this old TOT video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFeek0a8s7Q

Thanks for the link. Stay strong and resist the urge. :)

In the video, I suspect he has some tuning/resonance issues which might kill efficiency/output. Certainly doesn't sound like US.

The Sonotrodes for the Branson ultrasonic welder at work need to be pretty precisely tuned to around 19 kHz so they have their maximum ?displacement? at the surface where they transfer the sonic energy into the plastic part to be welded. It's a whole science and we don't use the thing much anymore. Please forgive me for being vague and imprecise like the badly trained operator that I am.

But man, those squeals from an insufficient surface contact... Like banshees from beyond hell. I should record those before we throw the thing out.

Just letting you know, today I watched some more TOT and subscribed. Really loving his sense of humor. Thanks for pointing him out.

Yeah TOT is definitely one unique character. He's funny and educational which is a great combination for learning new things. He doesn't post much these days, but his catalog of videos is pretty extensive and worth a watch. Glad you enjoy his videos as I do.
