It's a top-down system that protects everyone under it as long as authority is wielded justly. The 10 Commandments and the Constitution are intensely patriarchal documents for example. Matriarchy is transformational. In a matriarchy, rather than acknowledge and submit to righteous authority, the approach is to dialogue with authority and insert feelings and personal wants and interpretations. In a matriarchy, the greatest evil is the one who still says "Thou shalt not" and clings to the traditional authority structure. The Talmud is the supreme matriarchial book. In Genesis, the serpent Lucifer temps Eve by teaching her how to dialogue with God's authority. Rather than submit to the command (thou shalt not eat of this fruit", Lucifer shows Eve how to insert her own interpretation of God's command and to prioritize her own feelings and desires so she can express herself free of limitations and choose right and wrong for herself. Meanwhile Adam stood by, failing to wield his position of authority over Eve, and went along with the process. Right there in Genesis is the framework for the Talmudic system of debating with and disproving God rather than obeying him. And the foundation of every system that places relativistic perceived "truths" over external objective truth.
